Doll wigs take more handling than your own hair — and a little routine care keeps them soft, shiny and tangle-free for years. Here is how to wash, detangle and restyle your doll's wig without frying the fibers.
Know your fiber first
Most doll wigs are made from synthetic fiber, which looks great but hates heat — a hair dryer, curling iron or hot water can melt or permanently frizz it. Some premium wigs use heat-resistant fiber or real human hair, which can take gentle styling. When in doubt, treat your wig as heat-sensitive and stick to cool water and air drying.
How to wash a wig
- Gently finger-comb out loose tangles before it gets wet.
- Fill a basin with cool water and a small amount of mild or wig-specific shampoo. Swirl the wig through it — do not scrub or wring.
- Rinse in clean cool water, then smooth a little conditioner from mid-length to ends and rinse again.
- Press it in a towel to blot excess water. Never twist or rub it dry.
How often you wash depends on use — a wig that is mostly styled and displayed can go a couple of months, while one handled daily is happier with a wash every three to four weeks. Washing too often is the fastest way to make synthetic fiber go dry and brittle, so do not overdo it.
Detangle the right way
Set the damp wig on a stand or lay it flat, and work with a wide-tooth comb or a proper wig brush. Always start at the ends and move up toward the roots in small sections — combing from the top down only drags knots into a bigger mess and pulls fibers loose. A quick mist of wig detangler or leave-in helps stubborn spots slide free.
Air dry and restyle
Let the wig dry completely on a wig stand, away from direct sun and heaters. Once dry, shape it with your fingers or a comb. For a silver bob like Luna's, a light smoothing keeps the line crisp; for longer styles, loose overnight braids give soft waves with no heat at all. Only reach for low heat if the label confirms the fiber is heat-resistant.
Make wigs last longer
Store spare wigs on a stand or in their net to hold shape, keep them out of sunlight, and avoid over-washing — every few weeks, or whenever they look dull, is plenty. Rotating two or three wigs also spreads the wear so no single one wears out fast. If a wig arrives flat or creased from its packaging, a few minutes on a stand and a gentle finger-comb usually relaxes it back into shape.
